Year 3

Stibbington Residential 2020

Welcome to 3 Jupiter

Welcome to the spring term. We hope that your child is looking forward to another term of great learning.

In English, we will be reading some quest myths in preparation for planning and writing our own ones.  In guided reading, we will study the wonderful Philip Pullman novel ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ in which the main character sets off on a quest. After half term, we will focus on play scripts, and the book ‘Where The Wild Things Are’, by Eric Sendak which creates a wealth of opportunities for drama, role-play and diary writing.

In Maths, we will be furthering our understanding of addition and subtraction through regrouping and applying inverse to solve problems. We will have a real drive on learning the 4, 8 and 3 x tables so please support your child with these at home and remember to revisit the 2, 5 and 10 x tables. We will look at multiplication as arrays and discover that knowing one multiplication sentence means that we automatically know another. Also, we will link multiplication with division and learn that x and ÷ are the inverse of each other.

3 x 4 = 12         4 x 3 = 12

12÷ 4=12         12÷ 3 = 4

In Science, we will be investigating forces, including magnetism and will explore magnetism as well as planning and carrying out fair tests about friction. Remember that we will be having Pirate Day on Monday 20th January as an exciting way of exploring forces in action.

In History, we will study the Romans in Britain. We will look at the reasons for the expansion of the Roman empire and how the Romans managed to keep control over such a vast area. We will also study interpretations of Boudica (Boudicca), the differences between Celtic and Roman lifestyles in town and country, the Roman legacy and finally look at why the mighty Roman empire came to an end.

For Geography, we will be introducing a new unit on South Wales. During this topic, we will be using maps and atlases to find out about the distinctive features of the area as well as land use and economic changes.

Please do keep checking back for updates, and follow us on Twitter - this will give you an excellent insight to all of the learning that 3 Jupiter and the rest of the school get up to.

If you have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to catch one of us briefly after school, or make an appointment via the office. Remember that for anything confidential you can also email us directly – our email addresses can be found in the ‘Who’s Who' section of the website.

The children have made a great start to the term, so we are looking forward to another term of super learning.

Kind Regards

Miss McLaughlin and Mrs Jones
