Year 3

Welcome to 3 Jupiter

Welcome back for the summer term. We hope that you and your child are looking forward to another term of exciting learning. We are sure that the children must be on countdown to our residential visit in June.

In English we will begin the term with some persuasive writing through the talk for writing approach. After this, we will then focus on ‘Evacuees in WW2’ in preparation for our visit to Stibbington. This topic will include lots of opportunities for drama, role-play and writing.

For Maths we will continue to follow Hertfordshire’s Maths Essentials programme and will cover multiplication and how division is the inverse of this, as well as tackling words problems. The end of year expectation is that Year 3 pupils are expected to know the multiplication and division facts for the 3x, 4x and 8x tables, building on from 2x, 5x and 10x from KS1. Please ensure that your child continues to use the Rock Stars app to support their learning of the times tables and related division facts. We will also be finding fractions of quantities and ordering and comparing fractions. We will look at place value in terms of decimals, 2D and 3D shapes and time through analogue and digital clocks, including reading clocks to one minute intervals.

Our focus in Geography will be on using maps to locate countries and major cities in Europe and identifying the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and the location of tropical rainforests.  We will also find out about the animals that live in the different layers of the rainforests, which rainforest products we use in our everyday lives and how these link with Fairtrade. We will also discover how and why the rainforests are being destroyed and find out about ways that people are trying to save them.

Our art will be linked to this topic through the exploration of patterns in face painting and camouflage.

In Science we will continue our investigations into magnetism.  Then we will identify and explore the part flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal and investigate the way in which water is transported within plants.

In RE we will be finding out about Ramadan and the 5 pillars of Islam.

3 Jupiter will continue to swim on Tuesday afternoon until 18th June 2019.

Please do keep checking back for updates, and follow us on Twitter if you aren't yet doing so - this will give you an excellent insight to all of the learning that 3 Jupiter and the rest of the school get up to.

If you have any queries or questions please do not hesitate to catch me briefly after school or make an appointment via the office.

Kindest regards,

Miss McLaughlin, Mrs Hare & Mrs Jenner
